Our Northern Engineering division has been designing and manufacturing cranes and hoists for medium and heavy duty industrial applications for 120 years. There are countless twentieth-century Northern cranes still in use today.

Northern was founded with a can-do attitude, building products with plenty of muscle. Historically, Northern has pioneered steam-powered railcar trains, independent hoists, winches and jib cranes for a wide variety of applications. Northern became known for heavy-duty industrial service cranes for powerhouse and primary metals applications, double girder top running, single girder under running and gantry cranes. Northern was acquired by CMS in 1994, and countless Northern cranes are still in daily operation. Drawings and proprietary information for Northern’s Horizon Series cranes are now backed by the financial stability and ongoing technological R & D of parent company Konecranes.
